Concession Street is the oldest settlement area on the Hamilton mountain. It starts at Belvidere Avenue, just west of Sam Lawrence Park, and extends east past Mountain Drive Park on Upper Gage Avenue and ends at East 43rd Street. Concession seems to continue but beyond East 43rd Street this road is known as Mountain Brow Boulevard.
Development in the early 1900’s would begin at significant geographical locations, for example lakes or other bodies of water. We can see that the Hamilton Mountain also followed this trend with development beginning at the edge of the escarpment.
The homes in this neighbourhood are apartments/condominiums and single family dwellings and were built prior to 1960. As mentioned above, some of these homes were built as far back as the turn of the century (early 1900’s).
The average age of people living in this neighbourhood is roughly divided between 30-44 and 55-64 year olds. According to the census, 32% of the households in this neighbourhood are families with children.

Concession Street is one of the oldest commercial districts in the City of Hamilton. Today it is a thriving community with restaurants, entertainment and shopping, with many unique and interesting shops. Concession Street even has it’s own BIA.
One of my favourite shops on Concession Street is “Just the Essentials” where you will often find me stocking up on the handcrafted soap or other essential oils products and accessories. If you love essential oils, or want to learn more about them, I encourage you to get in touch with my favourite doTERRA Wellness Advocate Kathy Brown.

Seasonally, you can get your local produce at the Mountain Farmers Market, located at 19 Viewpoint Avenue, and open every Saturday morning from 7am-1pm (May to October).

Sam Lawrence Park is more than seven hectares of walkways, gardens and green space at the top of the Jolley Cut. It is best known for its panoramic views of downtown, the Dundas Valley and Lake Ontario. Definitely worth the trip to the end of the street for a day of walking and sight seeing.

The Jolley Cut is a Hamilton Mountain access route that runs from John Street at its base to Upper Wellington Street on top of the escarpment, connecting downtown to uptown, making commuting easy.
There is city bus service to and from the area, together with parking structures and street parking, making it accessible to the Hamilton Community. You can live uptown and commute to a job downtown, without having to pay for parking.

Concession Street is also home to the Juravinski Hospital. The hospital is best known as the hospital for the Regional Cancer Program. In addition to dedicated wards for cancer patients, Juravinski Hospital is also a general medical/surgical hospital with a community Emergency Department.

One of my favourite restaurants along Concession Street is Papa Leo’s Restaurant located at 638 Concession Street. If you happen to stop by I suggest ordering the Concession Street Salad!

You will find the Concession Branch of the Hamilton Public Library at 565 Concession Street. It was first named the Mountain Branch and opened in 1920, being the first branch of the Hamilton Library on the mountain. After occupying storefront locations for a number of years, a permanent building at the corner of Concession Street and Cliff Avenue was opened in 1949. In 1991, the building was demolished and the current building opened in early 1992. The branch offers materials and programming for children, teens and adults.
There are five sets of stairs that go up the escarpment, connecting downtown to uptown. They have been used by people as part of an exercise routine, and by people who would like to travel more economically. Of Hamilton’s 5 sets of steps, the Wentworth Stairs is one of the oldest. The original wooden steps were built in 1903 next to the site of the city’s second Incline railway. They were replaced with metal steps after a rock slide in March 1983 and now follow the path of the old Incline Railway. During summer months it is estimated that these steps are travelled over 2000 times a day.
The Wentworth stairs are accessible from Mountain Brow Park at the top of the escarpment and at the bottom of the escarpment they are located at the south end of Wentworth Street. There are also community bikes located at the bottom of the stairs. These are the most used escarpment stairs in Hamilton. They are also the longest set of stairs at 498 steps. The stairs are not evenly spaced apart. On the lower half of the stairs the steps are closer together while above the road they are further apart. These stairs are rated 5/5 on a difficulty level. At the top of the stairs, in Mountain Brow Park, there is a water station where you can refill your reusable water bottles.
